Rumeli Hamidiye battery, at Eceabat, is one of the Ottoman fortifications guarding the European side of the strait; it dates to the 19th century and is remembered with the Gallipoli campaign. Controlling the sea passage with its heavy guns, the battery was a strong link in the defensive system. The stone structure's role in holding the passage can still be read today.
