Editor's Note
The redoubt was built at an altitude of 2,850 meters during the reign of Abdülhamid II, between 1884 and 1896, to a design drawn up by Şahap Paşa, in order to control the valley lying behind the Palandöken Mountains, which begin at the southwestern corner of the Pasinler Plain and extend westward. Erzurum's largest redoubt, the Great Palandöken Redoubt consists of a headquarters, barracks rooms ranged along three sides of the courtyard, ambush rooms and artillery rooms. The rooms connect with one another and contain ventilation openings.
