Editor's Note
It was built between 1867 and 1872 by Sultan Abdülaziz against possible Russian or Iranian attacks approaching Erzurum from the east. The entrance and southwestern section of Aziziye Redoubt No. 1, located at the Topdağı site within the Nene Hatun Historical National Park about 2 km east of the city center, are still standing. Now largely destroyed, Aziziye Redoubt No. 1 once contained, during its period of use, a command building, 8 barracks, 3 or 4 halls, officers' rooms, a kitchen, a storehouse and water wells.
