The redoubt stands about 2 km from the city center, on the eastern side of Erzurum, at the Topdağı site within the Nene Hatun Historical National Park, to the west of the Aziziye Redoubts. The first structure built on Topdağı, it was erected in 1852 by Sultan Abdülmecid, under the supervision of the Erzurum governor Zarif Mustafa Paşa and according to a project specially prepared to protect Erzurum from enemy attacks coming from the direction of Yanıkdere to the east and the Gürcü Boğazı (Georgian Gorge) to the north.
