It was built as a primary school (sıbyan mektebi) in 1873 during the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz. It was used successively as the Judicial Official School, the Civil Service Secondary School, a high school, a teachers' college, a girls' secondary school, a practice primary school, the Cumhuriyet Primary School, a combat battalion headquarters, a children's home, a girls' imam-hatip high school, a boys' imam-hatip high school, and the Hacı Şükrü Çıkrıkçıoğlu Student Dormitory. Originally two storeys, the building had a third floor added in 2000.
