Editor's Note
It is thought that the building was first erected as a synagogue in the 2nd century BC, later converted into a church, and then into a mosque in the 12th or 13th century. The eastern part of the main prayer hall is roofed with a dome. Rubble stone and marble fragments were used in the walls, along with reused Byzantine-period column capitals. There is one column bearing a cross here. A small door leads into another structure: this is the synagogue, in whose garden stand Hebrew gravestones.
