Editor's Note
Throughout history Karacabey lay at the crossroads of trade routes and was an important transport hub from antiquity onward. In the village of Tophisar, 5 km east of Lake Uluabat, a caravanserai (Issız Han) was built in 1396 during the reign of Yıldırım Bayezid, on the highway connecting Bursa and Karacabey. Built to shelter travellers and caravans, it reflects the region's strategic importance. The Byzantine emperor Alexios Komnenos also had the fortress of Lopadion built to control the lake's entrances and exits.
