Çakmaktepe lies on the eastern shore of Lake Manyas, on the upper part of a north-south ridge between the lake and the Karacabey Plain. The southern Marmara region has undergone major changes due to tectonic movements and developments in its river basins. For this reason, one must assume that the characteristics of the find-spot and its relationship to the lake and plain environments were different from today's. What sets Çakmaktepe apart from the other Palaeolithic find-sites in Balıkesir is that the material here is dense and spread over a wide area.
