It lies between the villages of Yukarı Küpkıran and Kalender. Traces of settlement spread over a wide area at the foot of the castle. These settlements, damaged by illegal excavations, resemble the necropolis and settlement areas of other Iron Age castles in the region. Used after the Urartians by the other civilizations that dominated the region, the castle was last used in the Ottoman period and, owing to its strategic position, played a part especially in the 1877–78 Ottoman–Russian War and in the First...
