The village of Toprakkale lies at the northwestern tip of the Eleşkirt plain, at the junction of the old Bayezit road. Strategically well positioned, Toprakkale was built on a slope commanding both the old road and the plain. Toprakkale also held an important position in the Urartian period, and a mound dating to that era survives here. The mound, in a fairly steep location to the northwest of the village, is entered from the west. No scientific archaeological excavation has been carried out here, and the mound is today being plundered by illegal digs carried out by treasure hunters.
