Editor's Note
Known by the name Avak Vank (the Great Monastery), it was dedicated to the Apostle Saint Thaddeus, or more precisely to two apostles, Thaddeus and Bartholomew. In the 12th century, Avak Vank was home to a large community of monks and a productive scriptorium. It operated as one of Armenia's most important scriptoria and monastic universities until the end of the 15th century. In the largest church, Surp Arakelots, two khachkars dated 1466 and 1469 can be seen. The dome drum of the Surp Asdvadzadzin Church is partly destroyed, while the Surp Arakelots Church is riddled with holes.
