Editor's Note
Khachkars (also Kachkars) are carved monumental stones, generally found in Armenia, that hold an important place in Armenian culture. On the hill above the Abrank church, near the Surp David chapel, stand two magnificent khachkars more than six metres tall; they are visible from 8 km away on the Erzincan-Erzurum highway. The dates 1191 and 1194 can be read in the inscriptions on them. A third khachkar, smaller, that stood erect beside them until the 1970s has fallen over. A khachkar socket carved into a rock nearby probably indicates the existence of a fourth khachkar.
