Editor's Note
In 1834, "as a result of the decisions taken at the Council of State, it was decided to establish the Reserve Army Organisation." The full name of this army was "Redif-i Asakir-i Mansure," and the aim of its creation was to support the new army formed under the name "Asakir-i Mansure-i Muhammediyye" after the abolition of the Janissary corps (1826), and at the same time, through this newly formed army, to allow the people to be trained in their own regions and to provide for the internal security of those regions without being kept in the army for long periods. Accordingly, it was deemed appropriate to establish a battalion of 1,400 men in each of the cities that were the provincial and district capitals of the empire.
