Editor's Note
As its inscription has not survived, neither its construction date nor its founder is known; its last restoration was in 1911. The mosque holds great historical significance: on 18 May 1919, following the occupation of Izmir on 15 May 1919, those who had gathered at the Alaca Mescit for a mevlit recitation resolved, after listening to it, to reject the annexation and commit to the national struggle. At the Alaca Mescit, where gatherings continued, the decision for armed resistance was then taken. Through the Reading House, the Alaca Mescit meetings and the Balikesir Congresses, the region's first serious and conscious movement against the enemy occupations came from the civilians and intellectuals of Balikesir.
