Editor's Note
Covering 170,000 square metres, the cemetery's official records, begun in 1955, contain burial information for 56,000 people, while unofficial estimates suggest about 110,000 are buried here. Among those interred is Mehmet Vehbi Bolak, who served as a deputy for Karesi (Balıkesir) in the second and third terms of the Ottoman Chamber of Deputies and in the first and second terms of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, briefly held the post of Minister of Education for one year in the Fourth Council of Ministers, was a recipient of the red-and-green-ribboned Medal of Independence, and died on 6 April 1958.
