Editor's Note
Ergasteria (Kadıköy) Castle, formerly known as Tarsios, stands on a rocky hill at an elevation of 210 metres where the Kocaçay (its old name being Tarsios) and Kadıköy streams meet. Its date of construction is not known with certainty, but it was also used in the Byzantine period. Today it lies about 2 km northeast of the Kadıköy neighbourhood of Balya district, Balıkesir province. The castle occupies an advantageous position in terms of its geographical and topographical features. Its strategic importance is heightened by the fact that the road running from Kyzikos (Erdek) along the Tarsios (Kocaçay) river, via İvrindi to Pergamon (Bergama), passes close to the castle.
