Editor's Note
Mining activity in the Balya district of Balıkesir province is known to date back to antiquity. In the modern era, lead, zinc and silver have been mined at Balya by French mining companies from the 1880s onward. The French operated the mines until 1940. In fact, in 1901 the French mining company built a power plant and brought electricity to Balya at that time, said to be the first place in Anatolia to have electricity. The service building on the mine site stands on the Gönen–Balya road.
