It is located within the bounds of Akçin village and Misvak village in the Ayvacık district of Çanakkale province. The niches carved into the bedrock are thought to have been used for the worship of Cybele, and the site is believed to have been an "open-air sanctuary." Nearby there are other niches and a great many khamasorion-type rock-cut graves and chambers. Furthermore, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Beate Böhlendorf-Arslan notes in her report that a great deal of Byzantine-period spolia was encountered in Akçin village.
