The city occupies a commanding position over the Dardanelles. It flourished most between the 6th and 2nd centuries BC, and its founders are thought to have been Dorians who came from the island of Kos. It is known to have been a member of the Attic-Delian League in 427 BC, and it was one of the cities in the Troad to mint coins in its own name. It lost its importance in 189 BC when it was annexed to Ilion. Its first excavations were carried out illicitly by Schliemann.
