Editor's Note
The family were among the leading Levantines of Çanakkale, owning a great many properties. The house was built in 1847 and served as a military headquarters during the war years. In 1914 the Calvert family were the last Europeans to be evacuated from the war zone. Today the Kumkale Agricultural Estate occupies the land.
