Editor's Note
The Ajax tumulus lies about 2 km north of Ilium and about 1 km south of the Dardanelles. Within the tumulus there is a circular vaulted outer passage 3.5 metres wide, connected by a network of walls radiating out to a central stone tower. This is not a form used in pre-Roman tumulus structures, but it appears to have been popular for Imperial-period tumuli in northwestern Asia Minor. Furthermore, the construction technique points to the 2nd century AD, as does a Hadrianic-period lamp found in the fill above the vaulted entrance.
