Between 1997 and 2001, an artificially cut spring cave with three separate branches, about 160 m long, was excavated in the area southwest of the lower city. Some sections of the tunnel system date to the 3rd millennium BC. The siliceous sediment was dated using the Uranium-230/Thorium method. Existing for about 1,000 years during the 2nd millennium BC (Troy VI / VIIa), this system is interpreted as an "underground passage/way" (tunnel) (KASKAL.KUR). This water-associated deity KASKAL.KUR was, in 1280 BC, [invoked by] the great Hittite king [Tudhaliya] II.
