Editor's Note
Sigeion was an ancient Greek city in the north-west of the Troad, at the mouth of the Scamander (Karamenderes). It commanded a ridge between the Aegean Sea and the river, now known as Yenişehir near Çanakkale. The surrounding headland was called the Sigean Promontory and was often used as a reference point by ancient geographers because it marked the mouth of the Hellespont. The name derives from the Greek sigē, meaning 'silence'.
