Editor's Note
Midilli, originally built as SMS Breslau, was a Magdeburg-class light cruiser of the Imperial German Navy launched in 1911. Together with the battlecruiser Goeben she joined the Mediterranean Division and, after reaching Constantinople in 1914, was acquired by the Ottoman Empire and renamed Midilli. Their raids on Russian ports in October 1914 helped draw the Ottomans into World War I on the side of the Central Powers, and the ship served mainly in the Black Sea against the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
