Editor's Note
In his publication TROAS AND THE JOURNEY OF SAINT PAUL ON HIS SECOND MISSIONARY VOYAGE IN LIGHT OF THE LATEST ARCHAEOLOGICAL FINDINGS, Dr. Reyhan Korpe writes the following about the city: around Agonya, besides lead deposits, there were also gold, silver, copper and iron mines. Ancient sources note that the area around Argyria in particular held rich silver mines, and that the city's name itself derives from this metal (Greek argyros = silver). Argyria, set on the northern slopes of Mount Ida overlooking the Agonya plain, was identified during our surface surveys of the region in 2005-2007, about 1.8 km from the village of Karaydin.
