Editor's Note
The Altikulac Sarcophagus (also known as the Can Sarcophagus) is a painted marble sarcophagus dated on stylistic grounds to the early 4th century BC (400-375 BC). It was discovered in 1998 in a burial chamber within the Cingenetepe Tumulus in the Can district of Canakkale, in the southeast of the ancient Troad region. One face depicts a deer and boar hunting scene, the other a battle scene. Because the painted scenes on the marble sarcophagus are exceptionally well preserved, the piece is of great importance. It is thought to have been commissioned and made for an Anatolian dynast who ruled here in the late 5th century BC.
