The monastery takes its name from the nearby Medzop Pond, which means 'great hollow.' It was built in 1120 by Asdvadzadur and converted into a monastery in 1201 by Ardishetsi. To the east of the church stood the Surp Hagop chapel. It was also a spiritual center and had a school in the 12th century.
