Ancient Kotiaion is thought to lie beneath present-day Kütahya. From time to time, during road works and foundation excavations, various remains that may belong to Kotiaion come to light. Likewise, spolia believed to date from this ancient city are scattered roughly across the older quarters of the town. Written in many different forms throughout history, the name Kotiaion lived on after Turkish rule by transforming into the name "Kütahya."
