The mound, which takes its name from its flat, oval shape (Yassıhöyük meaning 'flat mound'), measures roughly 600-625 metres east to west, 500 metres north to south, and stands 13 metres high. Excavations at Yassıhöyük show that the site was inhabited continuously over a long span of time. The four main building levels identified at the mound shed light on the chronological history of the region: the earliest traces of settlement at Yassıhöyük are thought to date to the Early Bronze Age (3000-2000 BC).
