Editor's Note
The village of Ağırnas is a historic settlement founded within the Koramaz Valley to the east of Kayseri, about 25 kilometres from the city centre. There are differing views about the origin of its name: some sources hold that it is one of the ancient place names surviving from the Hittites, meaning "place of the altar," while others say it is of Turkish or Arabic origin, derived from the phrase "heavy person." Used as a settlement area in the Cappadocian, Roman, and Byzantine periods after the Hittites, Ağırnas contains numerous underground cities, shelters, and tunnels dating from these eras.
