Editor's Note
On the site of the Yanartaş Monastery Church there had earlier stood a small church built at the wish of Saint Helena (c. 246/50-330). This church was repaired by a decree issued during the reign of Sultan Selim III (1789-1808). The building was destroyed in the earthquake of 1 August 1835. The French traveller Charles Texier records that the greatest destruction in the region after this earthquake occurred in the village of Taxiarchis (Darsiyak). The Church of Saint Helena was not rebuilt after the earthquake; the Yanartaş Monastery Church was built in its place instead.
