The rock-cut Church of the Annunciation, thought to have been built around 1027, bears Christian motifs on its walls. The wall opposite the entrance depicts the Nativity of Christ, the right-hand wall his baptism, the left-hand wall the Archangel Gabriel, and above the entrance images of the Virgin Mary and Christ. "Annunciation" means glad tidings or good news; it is the name given to the moment when Gabriel announced to Mary the coming birth of Christ.
