Editor's Note
The Gültepe Roman Sarcophagus came to light in March 2018 in Kayseri's Gültepe neighborhood, as the result of an illegal dig in the garden of a car wash. Weighing about 10 tons, this monumental stone sarcophagus was placed under protection thanks to the timely intervention of the authorities and quickly became the subject of scholarly study. Research has shown that the sarcophagus is roughly 1,700 to 1,770 years old and can be dated to the 3rd or 4th century AD, that is, to the period when the Roman Empire was a powerful and influential presence in Anatolia.
