Editor's Note
The first settlement took place in the Troy I period (Early Bronze Age I–IIa), on rocky ground 3–5 m above sea level. Above it lie the Troy II and Troy VI periods (2nd millennium BC), and higher still, settlements that can be dated to the 7th–4th centuries BC [Akurgal 1983:13]. In 1949, in trench "E" dug to identify the mound's earliest settlements, the prehistoric layers were reached in three building levels. In the second building level, walls of structures built of stone below and mudbrick above were found to rest directly on bedrock [Akurgal 1950:pl.Ia].
