"Following the decision issued by Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gül on 17 May 2021, the prison opened in 1959 closed its gates. Established with a capacity of 1,300 inmates on an 80-decare site among the vineyards and farmland of Buca, the prison was later expanded to hold 3,200 people. At the time it was built it was one of Turkey's two largest penal institutions, along with Bayrampaşa Prison, and until the 2000s it operated as a facility housing all categories of offenders, criminal, terrorism, juvenile, and women, of both sexes in separate wards."
