It is the only municipal hospital in Turkey. Construction of the Emraz-ı Zühreviye (Venereal Diseases) Hospital began in 1906, and it opened in 1908. In 1913, in recognition of his great effort and dedication, the hospital was named after Eşref Pasha and became known as "Eşrefpaşa Hospital." From 1 February 1950, when it was transferred from the Provincial Special Administration to the municipality, it has been run by the municipality. The Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Eşrefpaşa Hospital has also served the medical faculties of two universities.
