Editor's Note
The textile industry held an important place and commanded a broad market in the commercial life of the Ottoman Empire. Şark Sanayi in Izmir was one of the enterprises founded and developed under these conditions. The majority of the shares of Şark Sanayi, which was of great importance to Izmir's economy, belonged to Belgian businessmen. Established in 1892 as a flour mill called "Couzinery Pittaco," the factory was converted into a yarn-spinning works by Couzinery in 1893.
