Editor's Note
After the great İzmir fire, the building rubble that had sat for years on the site of the former Armenian Quarter began to be cleared during the term of mayor Behçet Uz. This monument was erected in memory of the horses that died while hauling debris during these works, which were undertaken to create the Kültürpark. Made in 1940, this monumental sculpture is the work of the great sculptor Şadi Çalık, a pioneer of modern Turkish sculpture. Çalık received the commission while still a first-year student in the sculpture department of the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts. It depicts three adjoining horse heads drinking water from a trough.
