Editor's Note
This is the first building that the Uşşakizade family - known for members such as Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil and Atatürk's wife Latife Uşaklıgil - purchased and used in İzmir. It was bought by Helvacızade Hacı Ali Efendi, who came from Uşak and settled in İzmir, and was later used by his son Sadık Bey. After the Uşşakizade family acquired the building, they took up the caravan trade, no doubt owing in part to its proximity to Basmane station and to the caravan route arriving from İzmir's interior. Latife Hanım is known to have been born in this building and to have lived here during her primary-school years.
