Editor's Note
It is in the worst condition of all the surviving synagogues in İzmir. Set apart from the synagogues of the Kemeraltı district, it stands south of the Agora on the slopes of Kadifekale. It is thought to be one of the first three synagogues established in İzmir. While the synagogue and its neighbourhood once shared the same name, the district was renamed Sakarya after the proclamation of the Republic. In February 2021 the synagogue's south wall collapsed onto a house.
