Editor's Note
Located on the Kordon in the Konak district of İzmir, the building was constructed in the 19th century and was run by the Austrian J. Kraemer. The tallest building on First Kordon Avenue, the hotel housed the famous Kraemer Brewery and Restaurant on its ground floor, while the Loucas Theatre stood adjacent to it. During the years of İzmir's occupation the hotel was an important site for the Greek occupation forces, and it later hosted figures such as the poet Eşref, Yakup Kadri, Falih Rıfkı and Atatürk. It has been said that the Splendid Palace mentioned in the poem 'Despina of the Quarantine' is this building.
