The remains of the ancient city of Smyrna have been almost entirely destroyed, particularly as a result of the haphazard construction and looting that began in the 20th century. A temenos belonging to a very large temple located at the Degirmentepe site in Izmir has also been affected by this unfortunate process. In the first quarter of the 19th century, only the foundation remains of the temple and marble fragments scattered around it could be seen; today, modern buildings rise on its site.
