The Church of John (Yohannes Kilisesi) in Ürgüp (historically Prokopi) belonged to the Karamanlı Turkish Christians and is dedicated to Saint John the Russian. In the sources it is also referred to as the Church of Saint George, the Church of Saint Ioannis and the Church of Saint John the Russian. After Saint Ioannis's death, his body was buried in the Greek cemetery in Ürgüp and a small tomb was built over his grave. Later it was decided to remove this cemetery and build a large church in place of the tomb; construction began in 1886 and, after intensive efforts, the church was opened for worship in 1892.
