When the Ottoman army evacuated Tabriz, Tahmasp moved swiftly, entered the city, and then captured Van as well. During this process, the Safavid army that besieged Ercis failed to take the city, while the Ottoman forces likewise could not retake Van. As winter advanced and upon learning that Shah Tahmasp had left a garrison in Van and departed, Suleiman the Magnificent chose not to advance further; after consolidating the security of the border region, he traveled from Ahlat to Bitlis, then to Diyarbakir, and via Aleppo, Antakya, the Gulek Pass, and Konya reached Istanbul on 8 January 1536.
