The Harput Red Church (Kizil Kilise) was once a wooden building, but in 1850 (AH 1266) the wooden structure was demolished under a permit obtained from the local government. During this process, many Armenian houses around the church were donated to it, and afterwards construction began, following an established plan, on a grand masonry building. The structure has a near-square rectangular plan running east to west, with a five-nave layout. The naves consist of longitudinal spaces running perpendicular to the apse and separated from one another by rows of columns or piers.
