Harput (also Harpoot or Kharberd) is an ancient town in Elazığ Province that today forms a small district of the city of Elazığ. Artifacts dating to around 2000 BC have been found in the area, and the town is famous for Harput Castle. It also incorporates old mosques, a church, a museum, and the Buzluk (Ice) Cave. In the late Ottoman period it fell under the Mamuret-ul-Aziz Vilayet.
