Editor's Note
It stands in Ayazini, in the Ihsaniye district of Afyonkarahisar province. The church, thought to have been built between the 8th and 10th centuries AD, takes its name from a monogram carved in relief in its eastern section meaning "Mother of God." Until recent times it was used as a bathhouse, since water was heated in cauldrons here for bathing during weddings. The fires that were lit blackened the entire interior of the church. Another notable feature of this Byzantine-era structure is the set of tribal stamps belonging to Turkic peoples that were incised into the walls of the entrance corridor and narthex (entrance section).
