It was commissioned by Grand Vizier Gedik Ahmed Pasha (d. 1482), a statesman of the reigns of Mehmed II the Conqueror and Bayezid II, and comprises a mosque, a madrasa, a primary school, and a bath. The exact date of construction cannot be established; it is thought to have been built around 1470, during Gedik Ahmed Pasha's tenure as governor-general of Anatolia. The inscription above the mosque's portal dates to repairs carried out in AH 1210 (1795-96). In 1940 the mosque was repaired so thoroughly by the General Directorate of Foundations that it was almost rebuilt, and the madrasa and bath were also overhauled at that time.
