Editor's Note
A castle set on a natural rock mass rising 226 metres above the ground on an extinct volcano in the centre of Afyonkarahisar. It was used as a stronghold around 1350 BC in the time of the Hittite emperor Mursili II. It was known as Hapanuva under the Hittites, as Akroenos in Roman and Byzantine times, and as Karahisar from the Seljuk period onward.
