An ancient Ionian Greek city on the Aegean coast of Anatolia, in the Gulf of İzmir, founded by settlers from mainland Greece between the 10th and 8th centuries BC. Colonists from Phocaea founded Massalia (modern Marseille) in 600 BC, Emporion in 575 BC and Elea in 540 BC. Its ancient name survives in that of the modern town of Foça.
